Our awesome past intern Kristin has a blog where she writes about her findings and posts pictures like this.

Canning Workshop at Preston’s Paradise

When I read that Beth Brandon would be co-hosting a canning workshop I was quick to register and envisioned myself surrounded by glass jars and piles of vegetables. The workshop took place at Preston’s Paradise, an adorable house located on Preston Street in West Philadelphia that focuses on small-scale food production and sustainable living. They host farmer’s markets, organize free workshops and just started offering Sunday brunch, it really is paradise!
The workshop itself was immensely enjoyable from shucking fresh green beans to pouring hot jam into mason jars alongside a complete stranger. It was so relaxing to work closely with a small group of friendly people meanwhile learning an invaluable skill. The workshop leaders, Beth and Ryan, patiently answered questions through-out the entire process and handed out recipes for participants to take home and practice.

Not only did I leave with a still-warm jar of berry jam and dilly beans, but also the confidence to raid my local farmers market and can enough vegetables to last me the rest of the year.

POPPED! Fest 2009

Last year at POPPED! Fest I walked around in the scorching heat chugging Red Bull and eating vegan snacks to the sounds of The Ting Tings, Mates of State and Vampire Weekend. It was one of the best concerts of my life and all year I have been waiting for POPPED! to come again. This year POPPED! is happening in conjunction with the 2nd Street Festival in the NoLibs section of Philadelphia. With over 60 vendors (including a skate ramp from EXIT skate shop and The 700 Club Beer Garden), two stages and free admission this years POPPED! is going to be mind-blowing. If you’re in the area make sure to clear your Saturday plans.

Check out the POPPED! site for more information about vendors, band line-up and directions.
